Police and Council team up to disperse problem youths in East Ham.
The Wall End Safer Neighbourhoods team and Newham Council have teamed
up to make two wards in the borough a no-go zone for groups of troublemakers
who have been bringing misery to local people.
The move follows complaints from residents and business owners about
increased levels of anti social behaviour generated by groups of youths
who regulary congregate at locations in East Ham North and Wall End wards.
Groups of youths have been reported gathering in very large numbers,
drinking and intimidating local residents.
A dispersal notice has been introduced for the whole of the two wards,
East Ham North and Wall End, to include all roads and open spaces. This
will mean from Warwick Road in the Nprth down to Langdon Cresent in the
South. Plashet Park is also targeted in this approach to drive out crime
from the area. .
The order took effect from Sunday 15 October 2006 and will run until
April 14 2007. It means that police officers and Police Community Support
Officers can disperse groups of more than two people and tell those who
do not live in the area to leave and not return for up to 24 hours.
Those refusing to disperse or returning to the area within the specified
period can be arrested. It is punishable on conviction of a custodial
sentence of up to three months and / or a fine of up to £2500.
It’s your team
Your dedicated Safer Neighbourhoods team is there to make a difference
in your local community. The team provides a local, visible accessible
and familiar police service, working with the community and partners
to identify issues and concerns and find lasting solutions.
Safer Neighbourhoods teams are additional to other police units, working
soley in the community, and with the community, to help people feel safer
in their neighbourhoods.
Your Safer Neighbourhoods team will not be taken away from the ward
or assigned to other duties.
Safer Neighbourhood teams work flexible shifts to meet local needs.
They work on issues and concerns identified as priorities by the local
community. Your team wants to hear from you, so please phone, visit or
email them. Teams spend much of their time patrolling their wards, so
you may need to leave a message. They’ll get back to you as soon
as possible.
Finally, please remember that your Safer Neighbourhoods team is not
there to respond to and deal with emergency calls. In an emergency always
dial 999.
Ward Panel helps police Safer Neighbourhoods team tackle community’s
issues
The Wall End ward now has a firmly established Ward Panel thanks to the
community spirit which has developed between the Safer Neighbourhoods
team and local people.
The panel consists of local residents and other community members who
look at the problems within the ward and identify those that are affecting
peoples lives and then task the local police team with making a difference.
The panel currently meets on the last Monday of the month every two
months at Newham Council Depot Folkstone Road next meeting Monday 29
January 2007 .
The ward panel requires additional members of the public to represent
various sections of the community. If you have constructive ideas to
improve community life in Wall End the team would like to hear from you..
Sergeant Bills from Wall End Safer Neighbourhoods team said “ We
are fortunate to have a really committed and enthusiastic Chairperson
who is looking to invite further members of the public to the panel.
Safer Neighbourhoods is a fantastic opportunity for the community to
work together with the police to improve our area”.
